-- Marcellus Shale --
The first article (linked below) is a commentary on the Duke University “methane” study. In that piece, we summarize the study and then provide our own comments regarding both the strengths and weaknesses of the study. We feel that the document is unique because it provides a balanced perspective. It contrasts against the many commentaries that have labeled the study as representing either “proof” that fracking impairs drinking water (the position of anti-drilling ), or that it represents “junk science” (the position of pro-drilling).
The second document (linked below) is a summary of the recent literature on the greenhouse gas footprint of shale gas. It discusses the Cornell study that came out earlier this year – which argued that shale gas has a bigger greenhouse gas footprint than coal. Over the summer, a series of articles and technical reports came out that mostly disputed the Cornell study. Our summary reviews those studies as well, and provides a synthesis at the end.
While both documents are prepared for an adult audience, we carefully worded them so that they could be understood by the typical high-school junior. They can be used as a resource by high school students, to help teach concepts of scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and the relationship between energy and the environment. I’d be willing to work with others to convert them into something that best serves that purpose (i.e., by adding learning objectives, graphs, questions, etc.).
