Let’s talk about abandoned and orphaned gas and oil wells. Pennsylvania has a lot. Too many- we can get into reasons why in other discussions. But, to begin to address this problem, one step is to identify and record where these wells are. In the Northwest region, DEP staff encounter this issue frequently. Single-use gas wells are prolific in Pennsylvania; Erie County has the most.
Please join us for our next in our Speakers Series organized by my counterpart coordinator in the Northwest region, Elspeth Koehle. She has invited Elyse Henshaw, Water Quality Specialist and Kyle Thomas, Oil and Gas Inspector from the NWRO Oil and Gas Program to share how everyday people can use DEP tools to identify potentially abandoned or orphaned wells. Elyse and Kyle will give us insight on why that’s so, what it means, and what their office hopes to accomplish. They will share the map they use to track gas wells across the commonwealth. The discussion will include guidance on how the public can use the map to locate or report, to the Department, wells not already reflected on the map.
Please join us virtually on August 26th at 4:00 P.M. for the next program in the Speaker Series.
